Roora Ceremony Planning Guide — What You Need to Know
How to plan a roora ceremony in Zimbabwe. What you need for a roora, lobola process, roora decor ideas, equipment hire and coordination — including planning from abroad.
What is a roora and how does it work?
A roora (also known as lobola or kuroora) is the traditional Shona marriage ceremony in which the groom's family formally asks for the bride's hand and pays bride price. The process involves a munyai (go-between) who mediates between the two families. Key payments discussed include the danga (cattle price), mombe yeumai (mother's cow), and various smaller tokens of respect.
The roora ceremony typically takes place at the bride's family home (the muroora's family) and involves multiple rounds of negotiation, gift-giving and celebration. It is a deeply respected tradition across Zimbabwe.
What do I need for a roora ceremony?
The equipment and decor needs depend on the scale of the ceremony, but a typical roora setup includes:
— A tent or marquee for shade and shelter (peg-and-pole for budget, frame marquee for a more formal look)
— Seating for both families — plastic chairs for large groups, garden chairs for a more polished setup
— Tables for negotiations, gift display, and catering
— Catering equipment — chafing dishes, crockery, cutlery, water jugs and serving ware
— A PA system for announcements and music
— Draping and decor if the family wants a styled celebration area
— Cultural styling elements — African print table runners, dhuku fabric, traditional colour schemes
See our roora and lobola decor service page for the full range of what we supply.
Roora decor ideas
Roora ceremonies range from simple and traditional to elaborately styled celebrations. Popular decor approaches include:
— Traditional theme: Earth tones, African print fabrics (chitenge, dhuku), wooden elements, woven baskets as centrepieces
— Modern Zim traditional: A blend of contemporary elegance with cultural touches — white draping with African print sashes, gold accents with traditional patterns
— Elegant celebration: Full draping, Tiffany chairs, centrepieces, fairy lights — styled like a wedding reception but for the roora celebration
— Rustic outdoor: Natural textures, hessian runners, lanterns, greenery — suited to rural or garden settings
We can match the decor to the family's preferences and budget. Browse our catalogue for individual items or request a quote with your vision.
Planning a roora from abroad
Many roora ceremonies are coordinated from the diaspora — particularly from the UK, USA and South Africa. The groom's family may be overseas while the bride's family is in Zimbabwe. We work with diaspora clients regularly, coordinating via WhatsApp with your munyai or local family contact.
You can browse our catalogue online, request a quote remotely, pay a deposit via international bank transfer, and have your local contact confirm the setup on the day. See our diaspora planning guide or our planning from abroad page for full details on how this works.
