How to Plan a Wedding in Zimbabwe — Complete Guide
A complete guide to planning a wedding in Zimbabwe. Venues, equipment hire, catering, decor, timelines and budgets — everything you need from engagement to the big day.
Start with a realistic budget
Before you book anything, sit down with your partner and agree on a total budget. Zimbabwe weddings can range from intimate garden ceremonies to grand hotel receptions with hundreds of guests. Your budget determines the venue, guest count, decor style and equipment you can hire.
A useful rule: allocate roughly 40–50 per cent to the venue and catering, 15–20 per cent to decor and equipment hire, 10 per cent to attire and grooming, and spread the rest across photography, transport, stationery and entertainment. If you are working in USD (the standard for most suppliers), get quotes early so the numbers are real rather than guessed. Our event hire cost guide breaks down typical pricing in detail.
Choose the right venue
Harare and Bulawayo have a wide range of options: hotel ballrooms, lodges, country clubs, churches, gardens and farms. Consider the season — Zimbabwe's dry season (May to October) is the most popular for outdoor weddings because the weather is predictable.
Ask each venue what is included in their hire fee. Some provide tables and chairs; others provide an empty space and you bring everything. If you are hiring an empty venue, a single equipment supplier like Delightful Events can provide seating, tables, linen, tenting, draping, lighting and catering equipment — saving you from coordinating five different companies. Browse our full catalogue to see what is available.
Build your equipment and decor list
Once you know the venue and guest count, you can build an equipment list. The essentials for most Zimbabwe weddings include:
— Ceremony seating (garden chairs, Tiffany chairs or plastic chairs depending on style and budget)
— Reception tables (round banquet tables, rectangular trestle tables or cocktail tables)
— Table linen (tablecloths, runners, napkins, chair sashes)
— Centrepieces and decor (vases, candle holders, flower stands)
— A head table setup (often with a backdrop or draping)
— A dance floor if the venue does not have one
— Lighting (fairy lights, chandeliers, uplighters)
— A tent or marquee if the reception is outdoors
— Catering equipment (chafing dishes, crockery, cutlery, glassware)
— PA and sound equipment for speeches and music
Our event equipment hire guide explains each of these in more detail. You can browse the catalogue, add items to your list and request a quote — we reply with an itemised price, usually the same day.
Set a timeline
A typical Zimbabwe wedding planning timeline runs six to twelve months. Here is a rough guide:
12 months out: Set budget, choose date, book venue, start guest list.
9 months out: Book photographer, caterer, equipment hire, DJ or band.
6 months out: Choose decor colours and theme, confirm equipment list, order invitations.
3 months out: Finalise seating plan, confirm quantities with hire company, arrange transport.
1 month out: Final fittings, confirm all suppliers, brief setup crew on venue access times.
1 week out: Confirm delivery and setup schedule, do a venue walkthrough if possible.

Delivery, setup and the day itself
A good equipment hire company will handle logistics for you. At Delightful Events, our crew delivers to the venue ahead of time, sets up tables, chairs, linen, draping and decor according to your plan, and returns after the event to strike everything and collect.
Make sure your hire company knows the venue access times, where the setup areas are, and any restrictions (e.g. no nails in walls, generator requirements for outdoor venues). The fewer surprises on the day, the smoother it goes. If you are planning an outdoor event, our outdoor event planning guide covers weather, power and logistics.
Planning from abroad
If you are in the UK, USA, South Africa or anywhere in the diaspora, planning a Zimbabwe wedding is entirely doable. Most suppliers — including us — work comfortably over WhatsApp and email. You can browse our catalogue online, request quotes remotely, pay deposits via international bank transfer, and have a family member or wedding planner do a final walkthrough on your behalf.
We have a dedicated page for diaspora clients with more detail on how this works, and a full guide to planning a Zimbabwe event from abroad.
