Wedding Draping and Backdrop Guide
A guide to wedding draping and backdrops in Zimbabwe. Ceiling draping, wall draping, head table backdrops, fabric types and how to hire from Delightful Events.
What is event draping
Draping is the use of fabric to transform a venue's appearance. It covers plain walls, softens harsh ceilings, creates backdrops and adds colour and texture to any space. In Zimbabwe, draping is one of the most requested services for weddings — it can take a community hall and make it look like a five-star ballroom.
Draping is typically done with chiffon, organza or voile for a soft, flowing look. Heavier fabrics like satin or velvet are used for structured backdrops and stage curtains.
Ceiling draping
Ceiling draping is fabric hung across the roof of a venue or tent, creating a soft canopy effect. It hides unattractive roof structures (steel beams, corrugated iron) and adds warmth and intimacy to large spaces.
Common styles include flat panels hung parallel to the floor, gathered swags radiating from a central point (star draping), and layered draping with fairy lights woven between the fabric layers. White and ivory are the most popular ceiling colours, but coloured overlays can match your wedding theme. Pair ceiling draping with the right lighting for the best effect.
Head table backdrops
The backdrop behind the head table is the focal point of most wedding receptions and the background for the majority of your photos. It is worth investing thought and budget here.
Popular backdrop styles in Zimbabwe include:
— Gathered chiffon draping: Layers of fabric gathered and pinned to create flowing folds, often with fairy lights threaded through.
— Pipe-and-drape with swags: Fabric panels hung on a pipe frame, with swag details across the top.
— Flower or greenery walls: Fresh or artificial flowers mounted on a frame. High visual impact.
— Balloon walls: Increasingly popular for modern and colourful themes.
— Mixed media: Combining draping with greenery, flowers, lights and geometric frames for a layered look.
Make sure the backdrop is wide and tall enough to fill the space behind the head table — it should extend at least a metre beyond each end of the table.
Wall and entrance draping
Wall draping covers the sides of a venue to create a uniform, clean look. This is especially useful in community halls, school halls or tents where the walls are plain or unattractive. Entrance draping creates a dramatic first impression — guests walk through gathered curtains into the reception.
For tents, inner linings serve a similar purpose. A white lining inside a marquee gives a clean, polished appearance and covers the tent frame. Read more about tent options in our tent and marquee hire guide.
How to hire draping
Draping is usually quoted based on the area to be covered (measured in square metres or linear metres) and the type of fabric. Installation and removal are included in the hire — draping is technical work and should be done by experienced riggers who understand load points and fire safety.
When requesting a quote, tell your hire company the venue, the dimensions of the space, which surfaces you want draped (ceiling, walls, backdrop), and your colour preferences. Photos or sketches of the look you want are extremely helpful.
