Tombstone Unveiling Planning Guide — Zimbabwe
How to plan a tombstone unveiling in Zimbabwe. Equipment, setup, coordination from abroad and what families need — tenting, seating, catering equipment and logistics.
What is a tombstone unveiling?
A tombstone unveiling (also called a tombstone uncovering or memorial unveiling) is a ceremony held to formally reveal the headstone at the grave of a deceased family member. In Zimbabwe, this ceremony typically takes place one year or more after the burial and is an important cultural event that brings family together to honour the deceased.
The ceremony usually includes prayers, speeches, hymns, the physical unveiling of the tombstone, and a gathering afterwards with food and refreshments. It can range from a small family affair to a large community event with over a hundred guests.
Equipment for a tombstone unveiling
The equipment needs depend on the size of the gathering and the location (cemetery, rural homestead, or church). A typical setup includes:
— A tent or gazebo for shade at the gravesite
— Plastic chairs for seating (50–200 depending on family size)
— Tables for food service and display
— Catering equipment — chafing dishes, crockery, cutlery, water jugs, serving dishes
— A PA system for the ceremony — microphone and speaker
— Tablecloths and basic linen for the food tables
For larger unveilings, families may add a second tent at the family home for the after-gathering, with full catering setup. We supply and set up at both locations if needed.
Planning a tombstone unveiling from abroad
Many tombstone unveilings are coordinated by diaspora family members in the UK, USA, South Africa, Australia and Canada. The family abroad often funds the tombstone, the ceremony and the catering, while a local relative handles on-the-ground logistics.
We work with diaspora families regularly for tombstone unveilings. You can:
— Browse our catalogue and build your equipment list online
— Request a quote via the website or WhatsApp
— Pay via international bank transfer
— Have your local family contact confirm venue access and setup details
We coordinate with your contact on delivery timing, gravesite access and the after-gathering venue. See our diaspora planning guide for more on how we support families planning from overseas.
Logistics and timing
Tombstone unveilings are usually held on a Saturday morning. The ceremony at the gravesite typically starts early (8–10am) and the family gathering follows at a home or hall.
We recommend booking at least two weeks in advance so we can reserve stock and plan delivery to both locations if needed. For gravesites in Harare (Warren Hills, Granville, Glen Forest) we deliver directly. For rural areas, we can deliver to the nearest accessible point or to the family home.
Contact us to discuss your tombstone unveiling requirements. We handle the equipment so the family can focus on the ceremony.
